French born Alexandre Manbre' established his sugar business at Spitalfields, London in 1885 and later moved to Hammersmith.In 1926 Manbre' acquired Garton & Sons Co. of Battersea forming Manbre' & Garton. The company specialises in sugars and glucose for breweries and confectionary companies.In 1930 they pioneered the transport of bulk liquid sugars. They acquired Sankey Sugars in 1935 followed by Martineaux Sugar in 1961. From 1963 they reverted to Manbre' Sugars Ltd and Fowlers Treacle was acquired in 1976 in the same year the company was absorbed into Tate & Lyle. Manbre's fleet of over 100 vehicles included many Scammels hauling insulated 2370 gallon tankers.

Westfield Transport was founded in Mansfield in 1933 by Tom Eason and progressed from general transport to specialising in 'one piece' moving of large loads such as boilers, tanks, excavators, bailey bridges and occasionally aeroplanes.In 1948 Westfield Transport began the movement and installation of hosiery and textile machinery in one piece, shipped to England from the USA.This was a revolutionary concept as up to then these huge machines were dismanteled, transported then reassembled taking 6 skilled men upto 6months. Westfield was sold to Pickfords in 1964.

The Bedford wagon LYO 788 was originally built for the Auxiliary Fire Service as a foam carrier and was liveried in the customary gloss olive green with red AFS markings. It was part of the London Fire Brigade fleet carrying fleet designation AFT 1 it was then sold to the County of Clwyd Fire Brigade.This vehicle was repainted red and operated out of the retained fire station in Mold North Wales.In 1990, LYO 788 was transferred to the full time fire station in Deeside, N.Wales until 1992, subsequently being disposed of in 1993.

It was the Labour Government's mandate of 1945 that was to create the nationalised road haulage operation of british Road Services.Starting 3 years later in 1948, BRS had experienced many ups and downs in its history but managed to create a strong and viable transport operation from the companies that no one wanted, its shape and structure have changed significantly and much of what BRS has disappeared.

The name of Pickfords has been synonymous with transport for a very long time.Some think that James Pickford was the founder in the early part of the 18th century, while others believe that a certain Will Pickford was the original carrier, and he was in business a century earlier.The TK was used in during the 60's and 70's.

Among the most impressive long distance trucks to operate between the Cornish peninsular and the capital were the AEC 8 wheelers of Suttons (Cornwall) Ltd. Every night they carried fresh fish in refrigerated containers from Newlyn to London's famous Billingsgate market.During the 70's the company switched to buying Fodens and changed their livery to a bright yellow.Eight wheelers were favoured as the narrow roads and premises in the Cornish town did not suit long articulated vehicles.

Bannerman's established at Tain in the Highlands of Scotland in 1967 as seafood processors, and soon diversified into road transport.Now Bannerman Transport operate a fleet of Scania, Volvo, ERF, Man and Renault artics and rigids.transporting cereals, timber, coal, fertilisers and a wide range of general products including their own seafood throughout the UK.As part of their total package Bannerman's also operate 2 cranes.

ORE 672L was new to Bassetts Roadways Ltd in 1973 and was one of over 20 Atkinson Borderers to be found in the various fleets.In addition to carrying the familiar two tone blue and red livery, each vehicle was readily indentifiable by its individual name (mostly those of ladies) ORE 672L carried the name Jesica.The trailer load is of rolled steel sections , one of thousands delivered on behalf of the British Steel Shelton works.

Currently in its fith generation the company carries out domestic, corporate, business deepsea relocations and distribution.

In 1889, Charles Phillips of the Mortlake brewery negotiated a merger with the brewing firm of Watney & Company, who had been in the trade for some 50 years, having bought into the old Stag Brewery empire at pimlico in 1837.Some yeras later,Watney Combe Reid & Co. was formed after a new merger with the Wood Yard and Griffen Breweries. In 1972 the Company was taken over by the Grand Metropolitan Group and in 1991 Watneys was intergrated with Courage.Scottish Courage was formed in 1995 after Scottish & Newcastle's acquisition of Courage.

Witbread traces it origins back to the 18th century when in 1742 Samuel Whitbread first entered the brewing trade.By the 1780's he was brewing more beer than anyone had brewed before.His efforts laid the foundations of the modern business which two and a half centuries later is thriving ,continually adapting to the changing tastes and markets.

Scammel Highwayman tractor units were originally used by BOC to tow special insulated 'Cryogenic' tankers built by Scammel trailers with BOC Cryoplants aluminium inner vessels.They transported deeply refrigerated liquid oxygen, argon or nitrogen at temperatures levels as low as -196 degrees C. Today the BOC Group is one of the largest and most global of the world's gases companies.It serves over two million customers in 52 countries.

Based at Spa Road, Melksham, W.A.& A.G.Spiers was established by brothers Bill and Albert in 1931 and standardised on Albion 4 wheelers until the company was bought up by BRS in the days of nationalisation.The brothers went their seperate ways and Bill stayed on to manage the BRS depot until he bought Warminster Motor Co. in 1952.Before long, Bill had returned to haulage but now AEC's were to dominate this famous fleet.One of Spiers major contracts was Avon Tyres and they ran several vehicles in their livery.Spiers of Melksham became part of TDG in 1998.

during the late 60's H,B&H of Newton - le - Willows, Lancashire became well known for their maximum length drawbar outfits hauled by Leyland 8 wheelers. Typical of these was the ' Power Plus ' Octopus built between 1960 and 1965.
